RYT will be buzzing with activity over the coming winter months, offering a huge range of opportunities for the Riverland to watch, listen and have a go at new and familiar arts experiences. On offer are theatre, dance and music performances, a youth exhibition and several workshops. Kicking off the season is the EAT winter workshops.
RYT’s EAT program is funded by Arts SA’s Community Arts Development Fund in 2009 and offers ‘Bite Sized’ intensive workshops that introduce a wide range of performance and technical skills. EAT workshops are open to all aged 13-113.
Throughout July and August RYT is hosting four exciting artists to share their skills in movement, song-writing, theatre directing and writing.
On July 18 dancer and choreographer Katrina Lazaroff will lead a Movement for Actors workshop. The workshop is supported by Country Arts SA’s Riverland Dance initiate.
‘This will not be a dance class but rather a workshop that will give participants the confidence, training and trust to be a full body performer. It will assist in breaking down any inhibitions about using your body effectively when performing – either on stage or in front of the camera.’ say Katrina
About Katrina
Katrina has worked extensively as a dancer, choreographer, rehearsal director and dance educator since 1994 and is especially attuned to working with actors on the speciality of movement. Katrina has studied at The University of Adelaide, the Hooger Instituit Voor Danse, Belgium and WAAPA Perth, WA. Katrina has worked with Buzz Dance Theatre, Leigh Warren and Dancers (SA) Strut Dance, Perth Theatre Company, Steps Youth Dance Company, Artrage and Ausdance SA, ACT and WA.
The following weekend (July 25 & 26) acclaimed singer songwriter Heather Frahn will be in the Riverland to lead a two day Song Writing workshop, using improvisation to embrace people's ideas and support their learning process. Emerging songwriters, singers, poets and musicians are urged to participate!
Heather's songwriting skills have been loved around the world, and have been the focus for songwriting and recording workshops with community groups for years. Heather’s ability and openness allows her to work with people from all walks of life and diverse backgrounds in the community.
About Heather
Heather started playing guitar and singing in early childhood. She grew up in a farming community isolated from most musical learning opportunities. Instead she would listen to her mum’s records and learn to sing and play them “by ear”. Heather started writing her own songs early and with an obvious natural talent for music, she was encouraged to record her first demo tape of original songs in 1994 at age 14. Heather soon became engaged in professional music concerts and theatre productions in Adelaide, while at secondary school. Heather has continued on to receive great accolades, winning music awards, releasing critically acclaimed cd’s, opening the stage for many renowned musicians and performing live on music festival stages http://www.heatherfrahn.com/
At the end of the creative process there will be a live public performance by the participants featuring some songs created in the workshop. The Riverland Open Mic Night event (Sunday July 26) also invites local musicians and singers of ALL ages to share their original music and favourite covers in an intimate semi acoustic gig.
Later in August writer director Stephen House will facilitate a directing workshop and exciting young playwright Finnegan Kruckemeyer will share his secrets of success while in the Riverland working on a new play for 5-8 years olds - BigSmoke.
Like all our programs RYT’s EAT workshops are an opportunity for people to have a go, learn something new, meet others interested in the arts and have fun! I hope to meet many new faces this winter. Says Artistic Director Julie Waddington.
